Mead's Theory of the Development of Self

Mead’s theory of the development of self, states that the basis of humanity is the self. The self is defined as that part of an individual’s personality composed of an individual's self-awareness and self-image. For Mead, the self was a totally social phenomenon, inseparable from society. Mead connected the self and society by stating that “the emergence of the self is accomplished through social experience, based on the exchange of symbolic interaction, and occurring within a context in which people take the role of the other.”
